Food in America and today's American cuisine is as diverse
and rich as the different origins and backgrounds, different
cultures and original culinary traditions that American people
come from.
Ethnic and foreign influence on American
cooking
The study of American food, cooking and cuisine cannot be
complete without the study of the cuisine, food recipes and
cooking of all its parts, namely the cuisine of the different
ethnic American groups (German American cooking, Italian American
cooking, Greek American cooking, Mediterranean American cooking,
Middle Eastern American cooking, Asian American cooking, African
American cooking, etc.) and it starts with the study of the
traditional homeland cuisine of all these ethnic American
groups and their immigration patterns. Wherever immigrants
settled, they brought with them their foods, culinary traditions
and recipes. Over time, a lot of these recipes morphed into
uniquely American foods and became an integral part of a distinctively
American culinary tradition and cuisine. It is to this process
of the "Americanization" of ethnic cuisines, foods and recipes
that American cuisine today owes its richness, diversity and
vitality.
It becomes
clear that for us to fully understand and appreciate our American
cuisine and our foods and recipes, one has to first look into
the impact of ethnic foods and international foods on American
cuisine which is a study of our individual original cultures,
traditional foods, recipes and dining customs. Then, through
a process of "Americanization" of ethnic cuisine and recipes,
arrive at our culinary tradition today, our contemporary recipes,
foods, specialty foods, holiday recipes, restaurant trends,
contemporary specialty restaurants, international food restaurants,
fast foods and fast food places and chains, 5 star restaurants,
fine dining, etc.
